The World's Longest Running Musical

In 2006 when Cats was dethroned, the CBC said that
Les Misérables has surpassed Cats as the longest running musical in the world this weekend, as it marks the 21st anniversary of its debut in London's West End.

The musical, which is based on an 1862 novel by Victor Hugo and set in post-Napoleonic France, has played in 38 countries, been seen by 54 million people worldwide and has been translated into 21 languages.

Les Misérables opened on Oct. 8, 1985, at the Barbican theatre in London and continues to draw crowds at its current locale, the Queen's in the city's West End.

Cats star Elaine Paige was appearing on stage Saturday night to hand over the title to the rival show. Until then, Cats held the record for running continuously for 21 years until May 11, 2002.

Original cast members of Les Misérables were also on hand.
